This year’s Fund-A-Need is to finance a new pulley system for our stage, as well as to replace some curtains for the sake of greater fire safety. It’s all a part of our larger plan to modernize our stage so that it will be a safe and functional space for our students to develop and share their talents in drama, music and dance. Now more than ever is the time to support the performing arts at the Academy.

THE MONASTIC LEGACY OF THEATRE AT SAINT BEDE:

From the school’s earliest days, the monks of Saint Bede Academy have always been dedicated to the performing arts, and full length productions were being performed in the student refectory long before we had a stage in the gym. One of the first drama directors was Fr. Columba Kaule, who staged historical plays such as Pizzaro. Fr. Columba had both charisma and a powerful imagination, and was able to produce first rate productions with very few resources. He was succeeded in the next generation by our Fr. Simon, another monk in the line of Saint Bede theatre gurus. Among other more conventional productions, he wrote and produced plays in Latin and Greek, using the clerics of our seminary as actors. He was responsible for sketching out the design for our current stage and ensuring that it was well appointed, although he died before the building was built.

One of Fr. Simon’s students was William Hatfield from Peoria, who entered the monastic community and took the religious name of Placid. Fr. Placid had a passion for theatre paired with high standards of artistic expression, and he inspired his students to the same excellence. He was responsible for ambitious productions like Macbeth, Othello, and Billy Budd. Eventually Fr. Placid received an assignment in Peoria directing the TEC program, where he mentored a young high school actor and also inspired him to consider a vocation to monastic life at Saint Bede Abbey. That young man was our own Fr. Dominic, the current drama director and stage manager of the Academy. Fr. Dominic brings his own energy and expertise to the gym stage, making many improvements in technical theatre and forming his “Stage Rats” into a powerhouse of creativity and professionalism. Under his direction the Academy became involved with the Illinois Theatre Association, and now enjoys a reputation for excellence throughout the state. He also mentors the Genesius Project, a student group which writes original plays for our Fall Theatre productions. Some of these scripts have been professionally published and are performed all over the United States.

Before he died, Fr. Simon made sure that our gym stage had the best rigging system available at the time, so that lights could be safely raised and lowered, and curtains opened smoothly for performances. Unfortunately, even with careful operation (and Fr. Dom’s frugality and vigilance!) the pulleys and cables of that system are in need of replacement. Because the rigging industry safety standards have changed, we must replace or update almost all of the original equipment. Several older curtains are also in need of replacement for fire safety.

Help us honor the memory of all of the Academy’s drama directors, both monks and lay teachers, who for over 130 years inspired our students with their love of the performing arts, and gave encouragement and instruction to generations of actors, singers dancers, musicians, and stage hands.
